Makoto Shinkai Announces New Original Film for 2027

Acclaimed director Makoto Shinkai has announced his next feature film project, an original story set to premiere in theaters worldwide in late 2027. The film is being produced by CoMix Wave Films.

While plot details remain under wraps, Shinkai described the project as “a story about connection in an age of distance” during a brief press conference. The film will feature original character designs by Masayoshi Tanaka, who also designed characters for Shinkai’s previous blockbusters.

Following the massive global success of his previous films, anticipation for any new Shinkai project is at an all-time high. His works have collectively grossed over $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

Pre-production is already underway, with RADWIMPS confirmed to return for the musical score.
